Live, Work, and Build a Life in Australia as a New Zealand Citizen

Are you a Kiwi who wants to live and work in Australia? The Special Category Visa (Subclass 444) offers the most common way for New Zealand citizens to enter Australia and stay without a time limit. You’ll get it right when you arrive as long as you meet the requirements. But don’t think it’s all straightforward—you should know more if you plan to stay for a long time or want to become an Australian citizen in the future.

At Ezy Immigration, we help New Zealanders navigate all aspects of the Subclass 444 and what follows, from entry rights to pathway to citizenship.

What is the Subclass 444 Visa?

The Special Category Visa (Subclass 444) is a temporary visa that eligible New Zealand citizens receive when they arrive in Australia. It lets you live, work, and study in Australia for as long as you want, but it’s not a permanent visa.

This visa is for New Zealand citizens who travel to Australia with a valid New Zealand passport and meet health and character requirements. You don’t need to apply in advance—border officials issue it when you arrive.

Who Can Get the SCV Subclass 444 Visa?

As a New Zealand citizen, Australia might give you this visa when you arrive, if:

  • Your New Zealand passport is still valid.
  • You pass the health and character checks.
  • You’re not a ‘protected SCV holder’ (we’ll explain this later).

If you’re from New Zealand and were already living in Australia before February 26, 2001, you could be a Protected SCV holder. This status can give you more rights—like getting welfare and easier paths to citizenship.

What Does a Subclass 444 Visa Allow?

The SCV lets you:

  • Stay in Australia for as long as you want.
  • Do a job or take classes in Australia.
  • Come and go from Australia as you please while your visa stays valid.
  • Help eligible family members (Non Kiwis) get visas.
  • Eligible to apply for Australian citizenship after living in Australia for at least 4 years with at least 12 months as a permanent resident immediately before applying.

But, it doesn’t give you full access to social security, and your rights depend on when you first came to Australia.

Your Rights as a Kiwi Living in Australia

Your rights depend on when you got here:

  • Before 26 February 2001 – You might qualify as a Protected SCV holder, with extra benefits like social security access and a direct path to citizenship.
  • Between 27 February 2001 and 30 June 2023 – You may need to get a permanent visa to access welfare or become a citizen.
  • From 1 July 2023 onwards – Eligible New Zealanders with a 444 visa could apply for Australian citizenship without getting PR, if they meet living requirements and other conditions.

We assess your specific case and give advice on your top choices based on when you arrived, your work background, and your family circumstances.
