What Is the Post Study Work Visa?

The Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) allows recent graduates of approved New Zealand qualifications to live and work in New Zealand for a fixed period, typically up to three years, depending on your qualification and location of study.

This visa is designed to encourage skilled graduates to contribute to New Zealand’s workforce and economy. It also opens doors for those considering skilled residence pathways in the future, such as the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa.

Who Can Apply for a Post Study Work Visa?

To be eligible, you need to have completed a New Zealand qualification that meets Immigration New Zealand’s study criteria. This typically includes:

  • A qualification at Level 7 or above (Bachelor’s degree or higher), or
  • A Level 7 Graduate Diploma or Level 4–6 qualification if it was part of a two-year programme in an area on the Green List or in high demand

You must also have studied at an approved provider and maintained a valid student visa during your course.

Importantly, you must apply within 3 months of your student visa expiring (or 6 months if you completed your PhD or Master’s).

How Long Is the Post Study Work Visa Valid?

The duration of your Post Study Work Visa depends on the type and location of your studies:

  • Up to 3 years for those who studied a bachelor’s degree or higher in New Zealand
  • 1–2 years for graduate diplomas or lower-level diplomas depending on study area and eligibility
  • If your qualification is on the Green List, you may have more favourable conditions

Once granted, you can work full-time for any employer, in most industries, unless otherwise restricted by your qualification level.

What Are the Benefits of the Post Study Work Visa?

This visa gives you the flexibility to explore job opportunities that align with your field of study. It allows you to:

  • Gain New Zealand work experience to boost your CV
  • Transition to other pathways such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
  • Begin the path towards New Zealand residency, especially if your role appears on the Green List
  • Remain in New Zealand legally while applying for skilled roles

Unlike other temporary visas, the PSWV is tailored to give graduates a real chance at long-term settlement.

Can I Include My Partner or Family?

Yes, in many cases your partner can apply for a partner-based work visa, and your dependent children may qualify for visitor or student visas based on your status.
