What Is the Partner of a Worker Visitor Visa?

The Partner of a Worker Visitor Visa lets you stay in New Zealand while your partner has a valid temporary work visa. You can’t work with this visa, but you can live together, check out the country, and think about your future—without being separated.

This visa suits you if you:

  • Want to live in New Zealand with your working partner
  • Don’t aim to work or study during your time there
  • Have a serious recognized relationship with your partner

You’ll get a visa that matches the length of your partner’s visa. For example, if your partner has a work visa good for 12 months, you’ll receive a visitor visa for the same period.

Am I Eligible for This Partner of a Worker Visitor Visa?

To qualify, you must have a real and steady relationship with someone who holds a temporary work visa in New Zealand. This covers relationships where you are:

  • Married
  • In a civil union
  • Sharing a home in a de facto relationship

Legal marriage isn’t necessary to be eligible. The key is to show that your relationship is authentic and committed.

You also need to:

  • Have good health and character
  • Get support from your partner for the visa application
  • Plan to stay in New Zealand for a short time

Showing Your Partnership

A key part of this visa application is showing your relationship is real. Immigration New Zealand will want to see proof that your relationship is serious and ongoing.

Examples of proof include:

  • Sharing a home: joint rental agreements, utility bills
  • Money ties: shared bank accounts or expenses
  • Relationship timeline: photos, emails, travel records
  • Letters from friends or family who can confirm your relationship

If you’re unsure about what qualifies as strong evidence, we assist you in putting together a solid portfolio that meets INZ’s requirements.

What This Partner of a Worker Visitor Visa Allows and Doesn't Allow

While this visa lets you live in New Zealand, it doesn’t give you permission to work. If you want to work during your stay, you’ll need to apply for the Partner of a Worker Work Visa, which grants full work rights.

You also can’t study for more than three months on this visa. If you aim to study, we can help you look into a study-based visa option instead.

How Long Does the Visa Last?

The government will give you a visa that lasts as long as your partner’s work visa. This could range from a couple of months to three years, based on their visa type.

When it runs out, you can:

  • Apply again for another visitor visa
  • Change to a different visa (such as a work visa)
  • Exit New Zealand

What If My Partner Has a Different Visa?

This visa applies to people whose partners hold a temporary work visa. If your partner is in New Zealand on another type of visa, you might qualify for:

  • Partner of a New Zealander Visitor Visa
  • Partner of a Student Visitor Visa
  • Partner of a New Zealander Resident Visa

Each visa comes with its own requirements and perks. Ezy Immigration can guide you to pick the right option based on your partner’s status and your future plans.
