What Is the Partner of a Student Work Visa?

The Partner of a Student Work Visa lets you live and work in New Zealand while your partner completes full-time study for an eligible qualification. This visa differs from a visitor visa by offering open work rights, which means you can work for any employer in almost any job—without needing a job offer beforehand.

This visa aims to keep genuine couples together in New Zealand during the student’s studies. It applies to married civil union, or de facto partners.

Who Can Apply for This Partner of a Student Work Visa?

To be eligible for the Partner of a Student Work Visa:

  • You need to be in a real long-term relationship with someone who’s a full-time student in New Zealand.
  • Your partner should be getting a degree that will allow them to join a professional group (like teachers, Managers,IT, engineers, or doctors) or one that’s on the Green List of jobs that need more workers.
  • You’ll need to show clear proof that you’re a couple—things like shared money where you live together, trips you’ve taken, and other stuff.
  • You and your partner both have to pass basic health and background checks.

If your partner’s course doesn’t fit the bill for this visa, you might still be able to get a Partner of a Student Visitor Visa. This lets you stay in the country, but you can’t work.

How Does This Visa Work?

Once approved, this visa runs as long as your partner’s student visa. While you’re here, you can:

  • Work full-time in any job (except self-employment)
  • Come and go from New Zealand as you please
  • Share a home with your partner and help each other with studies and jobs

You don’t need a job offer to apply for this visa. You can submit your application before you arrive or when you’re already in New Zealand, and start looking for work after you get the green light.

Proving Your Relationship

Immigration New Zealand needs proof that your relationship is real. This means showing:

  • You’ve shared a home for a good while
  • You split the bills and expenses
  • You have records of talking and traveling together
  • People around you see you as a couple

Don’t worry about tackling this alone—our certified advisers will help you build a solid partnership file. They’ll show you what counts as good evidence and how to present it well.

What If My Partner's Course Doesn't Qualify?

If your partner’s qualification isn’t on the Green List or doesn’t lead to registration with a recognized professional body, you won’t be eligible for a work visa through partnership. Still, you can apply for a Partner of a Student Visitor Visa, which lets you stay in New Zealand with your partner while they study.

This visa might help you get an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), or a Partnership-based Work Visa down the road.

We’ll help you determine which option suits your situation and future plans best.
