Guardian Visitor Visa

Guardian Visitor Visa

Guardian of a Student Visitor Visa Stay With Your Child During Their NZ Studies

You might qualify to join your child in New Zealand as their legal guardian if they have a fee-paying student visa. The Guardian Visitor Visa of a Student allows one parent or legal guardian to remain in New Zealand while their child attends school. This helps provide emotional support and stability during their overseas education experience.

Parents who wish to live with or close to their school-age children as they study can use this visa. It doesn’t require applying for a separate long-term work or resident visa. Though temporary, this visa proves crucial for families who prioritize staying together in an unfamiliar setting.

Who Can Apply for a Guardian Visitor Visa?

You can apply for this visa if:

  • Your kid has a valid Student Visa – Fee Paying (not domestic or scholarship-funded)
  • The kid is 17 years old or younger
  • You are their legal guardian or parent
  • You plan to support your kid while they study in New Zealand

Keep in mind: one parent or guardian can go with the kid on this visa at a time. The parent must show they will be the main caregiver while in the country.

What Does the Guardian Visa Allow You to Do?

This visa allows you to live in New Zealand for as long as your child’s student visa lasts. You can’t work or study without special approval. Your main reason to stay must be to look after your child.

If you want to work in NZ later, you might apply for a Visitor Visa with a work condition variation or check out an Accredited Employer Work Visa option, if you qualify.

How Long Is the Guardian Visa Valid?

The guardian visa lasts as long as the child’s student visa. If your child studies longer, you’ll need to ask for a visa extension too.

If your child finishes school or exits New Zealand, your visa loses its validity — you must leave the country or submit an application for a new visa with a different purpose.

Can I Bring Other Children on This Visa?

This Guardian Visitor Visa doesn’t allow you to bring other dependent children. However, they might qualify to apply on their own for the Dependent Child Visitor Visa or Fee-Paying Student Visa if they plan to study in New Zealand as well.

Financial Requirements

You need to show that you can support yourself in New Zealand without working. This means providing proof of at least NZD $1,000 per month, or $400 per month if you’ve already paid for your housing.

You need to have full medical and travel insurance coverage for the entire time you’re staying.
