Dependent Child Visitor Visa – New Zealand

Temporary Stay. Family Together.
If you’re living in New Zealand on a work, student, or partnership visa and want your child to join you, the Dependent Child Visitor Visa offers a short-term solution. It allows your child to visit and stay with you temporarily, ensuring your family remains together even when your own visa may not support school enrolment or longer-term residence options.
At Ezy Immigration, we understand that families don’t want to be separated — especially when moving across borders. This visa bridges that gap by letting your child live with you in New Zealand during your temporary stay, even if they’re not eligible for a Dependent Child Student Visa. Our licensed immigration advisers can help you understand your options.

What Is a Dependent Child Visitor Visa?
This is a temporary visa for children under 20 years old who wish to join a parent already living in New Zealand on a valid visa. It’s commonly used when:
- The parent’s visa doesn’t allow dependent children to attend school for free
- The child will not be studying, or will only study for up to 3 months
- You’re not ready to commit to a student visa pathway
- You want to keep your family together during your stay
This visa allows your child to stay in New Zealand for the same duration as your own visa, but does not provide access to free schooling. If your child intends to attend school beyond 3 months, they will need a fee-paying student visa.
Who Can Apply?
The Dependent Child Visitor Visa is designed for biological, adopted, or legal children who are financially dependent and under the age of 20. Your child must be single and meet standard immigration health and character requirements.
To apply, you must show:
- A genuine parent-child relationship
- Sufficient funds to support your child during their stay
- That you hold a valid New Zealand visa (e.g. work, student, or partner visa)
Ezy Immigration will help you prepare the right documents and make sure your child’s application clearly shows they meet Immigration NZ’s criteria. Our licensed immigration advisers know what Immigration New Zealand is looking for and ensure your case is presented clearly and correctly.
How Long Is the Visa Valid?
The visa is typically granted for the same duration as the parent’s visa, but can be shorter depending on Immigration New Zealand’s discretion.
It can be renewed if your visa is extended, or converted to a student visa if your child plans to study long-term. We’ll help you determine the best option based on your plans in New Zealand. Licensed immigration advisers at Ezy Immigration can also assist if your child’s situation changes.
Why Choose This Visa?
Families often face unexpected barriers when moving to New Zealand — especially when immigration rules vary depending on the type of visa the parent holds. The Dependent Child Visitor Visa offers flexibility when your situation doesn’t fit traditional schooling pathways.
This visa is ideal if:
- You want your child to stay with you while you work or study
- Your visa doesn’t qualify for the Dependent Child Student Visa
- You’re staying temporarily and prefer not to apply for full student enrolment
While your child can’t work or stay long-term under this visa, it allows your family to enjoy day-to-day life together — and that peace of mind matters. Licensed immigration advisers can help assess if this is the right path for your family or if a different visa would offer more advantages.
What You'll Need
To ensure a successful application, you’ll need:
- Valid passport for your child
- Proof of your parental relationship (birth certificate, custody documents, etc.)
- Evidence of your own visa status in New Zealand
- Proof you can financially support your child (bank statements, sponsorship, etc.)
- Evidence of intended accommodation
- Health insurance for the child may also be required
We’ll guide you through these requirements and ensure everything is prepared for a smooth visa process. With licensed immigration advisers on your side, every document is double-checked and your application is handled with care.
