What Is the Specific Purpose Work Visa and Who Can Apply

You have a contract to commission machinery in Christchurch, a twelve-month secondment to your company’s Auckland office, or a place on the judging panel at an international event. The work is real, the dates are fixed, and you now have to answer a question that trips up employers and applicants alike: which New Zealand work visa does this assignment actually need?

Most people default to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) because it is the one they have heard of. For short, defined assignments, that can mean extra steps for you and your host organisation that you never needed to take. For other roles, the AEWV is exactly right, and applying under the wrong category costs you weeks.

This guide helps you choose. It compares the two visas side by side, works through five common scenarios, and gives you a document checklist to prepare before you lodge. If you want the fundamentals first, our Specific Purpose Work Visa service page covers what the visa is and who it is designed for.

Why the Choice Matters More Than You Think

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) assesses your application against the instructions for the visa you applied for, not the one that would have suited you better. If your purpose does not match the category, the application can be declined even when your skills and your employer are beyond question.

There are three practical consequences of choosing poorly:

  • Lost time. A declined or withdrawn application means starting again, often with a project start date already locked in.
  • Unnecessary cost. Government fees are not refunded because you picked the wrong category.
  • Conditions that do not fit. Your visa conditions tie you to a particular job, employer and location. If those conditions do not reflect what you are really doing in New Zealand, you risk breaching them.

Getting the category right at the outset is the single most valuable thing you can do for your application.

Specific Purpose Work Visa vs AEWV at a Glance

Specific Purpose Work Visa Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

Built for

A defined purpose or event with a clear end point

Ongoing employment in a role an accredited NZ employer cannot fill locally

Who drives the process

You, supported by evidence from your employer or host
The employer first, then you

Employer accreditation

Not part of this visa
Required before you can apply

Job Check

Not part of this visa
Required for the role before you can apply

Length of stay

As long as the purpose or event requires

Set by the AEWV stay duration rules for your role and pay

Work conditions

Only the job, employer and location stated on your visa
Tied to the accredited employer and approved role

Pathway to residence

No direct pathway
Can support some residence pathways, depending on the role

Family

Cannot be included; they apply for their own visas
Cannot be included; they apply for their own visas

The simplest way to read the table: the Specific Purpose Work Visa asks “what are you coming to do, and when will it be finished?”, while the AEWV asks “has this employer proved it needs a migrant worker for this job?”.

If your situation points towards the AEWV, start with our Accredited Employer Work Visa page. Your employer will also need to understand employer accreditation and the Job Check application before you can lodge anything. Our guides on how to get employer accreditation and the Job Check for accredited employers explain each step.

Five Worked Scenarios

The scenarios below are illustrative. They show how the purpose of the work, rather than your job title, determines the right category.

  • The situation. A German manufacturer sells a packaging line to a food producer in Hawke’s Bay. The sale includes installation and commissioning by the manufacturer’s own technician, who will be on site for ten weeks.
  • The likely fit. Specific Purpose Work Visa. The technician is installing specialised equipment supplied by an overseas company, remains employed by that company, and has a clear finish date.
  • What the application rests on. The supply contract showing installation is part of the sale, a letter confirming the technician’s role and dates, and evidence of their experience with that equipment.
  • The situation. A regional finance director at a Singapore-headquartered group is asked to spend twelve months leading a restructure of the New Zealand subsidiary.
  • The likely fit. Specific Purpose Work Visa, as a senior business person on a short-term secondment. INZ allows people in this group to apply for a further twelve months if the secondment runs over.
  • What the application rests on. Evidence of seniority, the relationship between the overseas and New Zealand entities, and a secondment letter setting out the purpose and duration.
  • The situation. A multinational engineering consultancy transfers a principal engineer from its Sydney office to its Wellington office for a multi-year infrastructure programme.
  • The likely fit. Specific Purpose Work Visa, as an intra-corporate transferee. This group can apply to stay a further three years, which is why you will sometimes see this visa described as lasting far longer than a typical “short-term” assignment.
  • What the application rests on. Proof of existing employment with the multinational, the transfer terms, and evidence that the role is at the level INZ requires for transferees.
  • The situation. A Tauranga construction firm finds an experienced site supervisor in the UK and offers a two-year fixed-term employment agreement.
  • The likely fit. AEWV. Although the contract has an end date, this is ordinary employment with a New Zealand employer in a role that could be advertised locally. A fixed term on its own does not make the work a “specific purpose”. The firm needs accreditation and an approved Job Check first, and you can check whether an employer is accredited before you accept an offer.
  • The situation. A sound engineer is travelling with an international act for three New Zealand arena dates.
  • The likely fit. Neither. INZ directs people working in the entertainment industry to the Entertainers Work Visa instead. It is a useful reminder that a short, clearly defined job does not automatically belong under the Specific Purpose category.

If none of these scenarios matches yours, our overview of the types of temporary visas in New Zealand and our New Zealand work visa guide set out the wider options.

Three Questions That Settle Most Cases

When you are unsure, work through these in order.

  • Is there a defined purpose or event with a natural end? Commissioning a machine, completing a secondment or officiating at a tournament all have one. “Working for the company until the contract is renewed” does not.
  • Who is your employer while you are in New Zealand? If you stay on an overseas payroll and are sent here for a task, the Specific Purpose category is often relevant. If a New Zealand business is hiring you into its own workforce, the AEWV is the usual route.

Specific Purpose Work Visa Document Checklist

INZ’s requirements change with your purpose, so treat this as a preparation list rather than a guarantee of what your case officer will ask for.

  • A copy of your passport or certificate of identity, with details entered exactly as they appear on the document
  • One acceptable visa photo for an online application
  • A job offer, letter of invitation or schedule of events
  • A letter from your employer or host organisation explaining what you will do, where, and for how long
  • An Employer Supplementary Form (INZ 1113), where your purpose requires one
  • Supporting commercial documents where relevant, such as a supply contract or secondment agreement
  • Employment records or references
  • Qualification certificates relevant to the task
  • Evidence of international merit or distinction, if your purpose depends on it
  • A chest X-ray is not normally needed for stays under six months, and a medical certificate is not normally needed for stays under twelve months. INZ can still ask for either.
  • Police certificates are required if you are 17 or older and your total time in New Zealand, including earlier visas, will reach 24 months or more. They must be less than six months old when you apply.
  • Certified English translations of any police or medical certificates not issued in English
  • Bank statements, evidence of salary, or an employer guarantee of maintenance and accommodation
  • A completed Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025) if someone is sponsoring you
  • A ticket out of New Zealand, or proof of funds to buy one in addition to your living costs

The most common weakness we see is not a missing document but a vague one. A letter that says you are “required for a project” tells a case officer very little. A letter that names the equipment, the site, the milestones and the completion date does most of the persuading for you.

Timing, Cost and Conditions to Plan Around

A few facts shape your planning more than any others. They are current at the time of writing; check INZ before you lodge.

  • Fee. INZ lists the Specific Purpose Work Visa from NZD $1,455.
  • Processing time. INZ reports that 80% of applications are decided within three weeks. Complex cases take longer, so build in a margin before your start date.
  • Travel window. You must arrive in New Zealand within twelve months of the visa being issued.
  • Work conditions. You can only work in the job, for the employer and in the location stated on your visa.
  • Re-entry. If you plan to leave and return during your assignment, check that your visa carries a multiple-entry travel condition.
  • Extensions. Only senior or specialist business people on secondment and intra-corporate transferees can apply for a further Specific Purpose Work Visa. Everyone else needs a different New Zealand temporary visa if their plans change.

What About Your Family?

Your partner and dependent children cannot be included in your Specific Purpose Work Visa application. They can apply for their own visas based on their relationship to you, and what they qualify for depends on your visa and their circumstances.

The usual options are a Partner of a Worker Work Visa or Partner of a Worker Visitor Visa for your partner, and a Dependent Child Visitor Visa or Dependent Child Student Visa for children. Lodging the family’s applications alongside yours keeps everyone’s timelines aligned. Our partnership visas guide explains how these applications work.

Get the Category Right Before You Apply

Choosing between the Specific Purpose Work Visa and the AEWV is a judgement about how INZ will read your purpose, and it is far easier to get right before lodging than to correct afterwards.

Ezy Immigration is led by Eddie Dhiman, a New Zealand Licensed Immigration Adviser and Australian Registered Migration Agent. Our licensed immigration advisers work with overseas companies, New Zealand hosts and individual specialists to confirm the right category, shape the supporting evidence, and lodge an application that is ready to be decided.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The Specific Purpose Work Visa covers a defined purpose or event, while the AEWV covers ongoing employment with an accredited New Zealand employer. They have different requirements, processes and conditions.

No. Employer accreditation and the Job Check belong to the AEWV process. For a Specific Purpose Work Visa, your employer or host supports your application with evidence of the purpose and timeframe.

INZ currently lists the fee as from NZD $1,455. Fees change, so confirm the amount on the INZ website before you apply.

INZ reports that 80% of applications are processed within three weeks. Incomplete applications and requests for further information extend that, so apply well ahead of your start date.

Not normally for shorter stays. A chest X-ray is not usually required under six months, and a medical certificate is not usually required under twelve months, although INZ can request either.

You do if you are 17 or older and your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer, counting earlier visas. INZ may also ask for one during processing.

INZ directs people working in the entertainment industry to the Entertainers Work Visa instead. If your role sits on the edge of that industry, get advice before choosing a category.

You must enter New Zealand within twelve months of the date your visa is issued. If you are outside New Zealand, the visa is valid from the date you first arrive.

Only if your visa has a multiple-entry travel condition. Without it, your visa expires when you leave New Zealand.

Not directly. If residence is your goal, pathways such as the Skilled Migrant Category or the Green List are designed for that, and each has its own requirements.
