New “Parent Boost” Visitor Visa

New Zealand has introduced one of the most significant family-visa changes in years. From 29 September 2025, Immigration New Zealand began accepting applications for the Parent Boost Visitor Visa — a long-term, multiple-entry visa letting parents of New Zealand citizens and residents spend extended time in the country without applying through a residence pathway.

Parents on this visa can stay for up to five years at a stretch, with the option to apply for a second visa covering another five years — a potential 10 years total. For families who’ve spent years managing short visitor visa stints and border runs, it’s a meaningfully different option.

Why New Zealand Introduced This Visa

The Parent Boost Visa isn’t just a family-reunification measure — it’s also a retention play. Immigration New Zealand has been explicit that keeping skilled migrants in the country long-term often comes down to family ties. Many migrants weigh where to settle based on how easily their parents can be part of their children’s lives, not just whether they themselves can find work. By offering a genuine long-stay option that doesn’t require the complexity of a residence application, the government is aiming to make New Zealand a more attractive long-term choice for the skilled migrants it’s trying to keep.

How It's Different From New Zealand's Other Parent Visa Options

New Zealand now effectively has three separate pathways for parents wanting to spend time with family here, and it’s easy to conflate them:

The Parent Boost Visa sits deliberately in between: more generous than a standard visitor visa, but without the complexity — or permanence — of a residence application. It suits families who want their parents genuinely present in day-to-day life (school pickups, help after a new baby, ongoing childcare support) without committing to, or waiting years for, a residence outcome. Families weighing up whether parents should stay in New Zealand long-term under the Parent Resident Visa instead can find the fuller picture there, and our guide on how to bring parents to New Zealand covers the broader comparison.

What It Doesn't Do

It’s worth being clear about the limits. The Parent Boost Visa does not lead to residence — there’s no pathway from this visa into permanent status. Parents also can’t work or study while on it. Families set on eventually bringing a parent to New Zealand permanently should be looking at eligibility for the Parent Resident Visa or the Parent Retirement Resident Visa alongside, or instead of, this option.

Eligibility, Costs, and Requirements

The visa comes with specific requirements around sponsor income or parents’ personal funds, health insurance coverage, and application fees — these are detailed in full, along with current thresholds, on our Parent Boost Visitor Visa page, which we keep updated as Immigration New Zealand’s figures change.

Talk to Ezy Immigration

Working out whether the Parent Boost Visa, the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, or a residence pathway is the right fit for your family depends on your specific circumstances — how long you want your parents here, whether residence is the eventual goal, and what you can meet in terms of income or savings. At Ezy Immigration, we help families weigh these options and build applications that hold up.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Both visas continue to run alongside each other. The Parent Boost Visa offers longer stays but comes with higher financial thresholds, so the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa remains a lower-cost option for families who don’t need the extended stay.

The visa is aimed at parents of New Zealand citizens or residents, though eligibility can extend to legal guardians in some circumstances. It’s worth confirming your specific family relationship against current criteria before applying.

Yes — the thresholds are tied to figures like the New Zealand median wage and Superannuation rates, which are reviewed periodically. See our breakdown of sponsor income requirements for the latest figures.

Time spent on a Parent Boost Visa doesn’t count toward residence, and the two are assessed independently. Families intending to pursue residence later should read up on who can apply for the Parent Resident Visa and plan both applications separately rather than assuming one leads into the other.

Visa conditions are generally assessed against the rules in place at the time of application. However, family immigration settings in New Zealand have shifted more than once in recent years — including the 2025 Parent Resident Visa cap reset — so it’s worth getting current advice close to your planned application date rather than relying on older information.

Unlike the Parent Resident Visa eligibility criteria, which operate under an annual cap, the Parent Boost Visa isn’t currently subject to the same kind of intake limit — though eligibility and financial requirements still apply. Immigration settings can change, so check current status before applying.
